Restoring a Mk6 Golf R Headliner

Restoring a Mk6 Golf R Headliner

We recently had the pleasure of supplying our Charcoal Foam Backed Suede to Graeme. He specializes in importing Japanese Volkswagen and Audi vehicles.

His latest project was Mk6 VW Golf R.

It had a familiar issue we hear about often: sagging headlining caused by heat damage.

“They arrive from Japan with the headlining dropped. Quite commonly due to the heat, especially in black cars like this one,” he told us. “I got samples from a few places. Your charcoal is extremely close to the factory colour. The quality was far better than other samples I got.”

When dealing with headliner restoration, colour accuracy and material quality are everything. Graeme needed a product that didn’t just look right but also felt authentic. Something with a scrim backing, like the factory original. Our Charcoal Foam Backed Suede checked both boxes.

“I wanted it to still have the feel of the original, so it had to have the scrim. I’m sure I’ll be fine with the next one—learned a few lessons doing this one.”

The foam backed does not stretch as much as much as the unbacked version.

“First time I’ve used the foam backed. It didn’t have quite the same stretch/flexibility as your unbacked lining stuff. But it turned out well.”

The result? A fresh, clean headlining that restores the premium look of the Golf R’s interior.

“Perfect, thanks. All the samples I’ve had so far haven’t even been close. I import Japanese VWs and Audis. I’ll definitely use you again when the next one arrives that has the same heat damage.”

We're always happy to support professionals who care about quality and authenticity. Whether you’re restoring imports or modernizing interiors.

Our Auto Suede range will help you achieve factory-finish results that last.
